History of the Holden Torana.
It was the year of 1960, when Holden realised that there was a market for smaller cars and developed the Vauxhall Viva in 1964. In all honesty the first release was not successful. Holden then took the concept and added some modifications to the original car and called it the HB Torana in 1967. The name Torana comes from from an Aboriginal word meaning to fly.
The upgraded model to the HB was the LC Torana and this was produced in 1968. The two models were very similar but the LC had a longer wheelbase and new dynamics for its body. 1968 was also the year the six cylinder engine was introduced to the Torana. With the introduction of a six cylinder engine came the birth of the GTR and GTR X-UI.
The LJ Torana was released in 1972 and was very similar to the LC apart from a few minor improvements. The LJ had a new grill and new split rear lights. The Holden LC Torana was embraced by the Australian public and became very popular.
The LH Torana was released by Holden in 1974. The main difference between earlier models was the increased size of the LH. The LH also came equipped with a V8 which continued on the GTR XU-1 theme. (SL/R 5000).
The Torana LX was first released in the early 1976. The LX was produced with square front headlights and came with Radial Tuned Suspension. The LX model also came in a hatchback version, which gave the birth to the sports hatch known as the SS Torana. The racing version of the LX Torana was called the A9X which dominated the racing track.
The introduction of the UC Torana was in 1978 minus the V8 engines. Holden started producing the more modern Commodore and the Torana was now a part of History.
